Full description of the development director position

Washington Environmental Council and Washington Conservation Voters, Development Director

The Development Director works with the Executive Directors of both organizations to develop and implement an overall fundraising strategy for both the Washington Environmental Council and Washington Conservation Voters. The Development Director is responsible for all fundraising activities for WCV and WEC, which currently include: major donor fundraising, planned giving and endowment development, membership, grant seeking and reporting, and special events. The Development Director is responsible for building and supervising a team of 3-4 development staff members. 

Responsibilities


Major Donor

  • Conceive, develop and implement a plan to significantly expand both organizations’ Major Donor programs over the next several years;
  • Ensure that these annual Major Donor plans are executed in a timely fashion, providing oversight and support to staff as needed;
  • Provide support, training and encouragement to board members as they help achieve our Major Donor goals;
  • Develop and manage long-term donor cultivation program including enhanced personalized communications with donors.


Planned Giving and Endowment

  • Develop a Planned Giving program for WEC with a staged implementation plan. Ensure it is integrated with Membership and Major Donor efforts;
  • Work with Executive Director and Finance Committee to evaluate needs relating to the existing Endowment and explore the feasibility of an endowment campaign. Launch and manage such a campaign if timely and strategic.


Membership Development and Retention

  • Oversee the development and execution of annual membership plans which includes recruiting new members and retaining current members;
  • Conduct analysis of membership recruitment and retention activities and plan future efforts;
  • Develop on-line giving programs that are integrated with overall membership and communications plans.


Grant Seeking and Reporting

  • Develop annual grant plan which includes reporting and submittal schedules;
  •  Prepare grant proposals and reports, working with the Executive Directors and other staff as needed;
  • Research and find new funding sources for issue campaigns or projects
  • Track the status of all proposals and maintain foundation files
  • Work with the Executive Directors to monitor the attainment of grant goals.


Special Events

  • Oversee the annual planning and execution of the WEC Heroes in Our Own Backyard Celebration to ensure we meet our fundraising and outreach goals. This multi-faceted event attracts over 500 people and includes a keynote speaker, awards ceremony, and silent and live auctions. A staff member is responsible for the detailed efforts of planning, preparation and production. 
  • Oversee the overall planning and execution of the WCV Fall Breakfast. This event attracts over 500 people including many elected officials and includes a program with several speakers. A staff member is responsible for the detailed efforts of planning, preparation and production.
  • Plan and coordinate other events as needed. This may include other smaller fundraising events in cities around the state and donor recognition activities.


Other

  • Provide input to both Executive Directors for the development of revenue plans and monthly cashflow reports.
  • Be available as the job demands including some evening and weekend meetings.


Qualifications

  • A passion for environment!
  • Strong background (5+ years) in development including a track record of success in major donor fundraising;
  • Creative energy to build a new integrated development department;
  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate several projects simultaneously;
  • Demonstrated ability to train and motivate board members and staff to raise funds;
  • Ability to work both independently and to build and manage a team;
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Flexible;
  • Experience with advocacy or political efforts is helpful but not necessary.
