Burien Safe Sidewalks Campaign:

The Burien City Council has voted to form a Transportation Benefit District and send a $25 vehicle license fee to the voters.  The fee would last two years and would be specifically dedicated to the completion of two high-priority projects from Burien’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Master Plan.

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Master Plan was completed, following extensive public participation, in 2004.  However, little progress has been made in completing the improvements the plan called for, due to the lack of a dedicated revenue source.  Since incorporating in 1993, Burien has extensively redeveloped its downtown into a walkable, transit-oriented community.  This has included some bicycle and pedestrian improvements but they are primarily concentrated in the vicinity of downtown Burien.

The voters will decide whether or not to impose the fee on the November 3 ballot.  A simple majority is required for approval.
