Congress just voted to pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act with a 219 yea to 212 nay vote. Full roll call here: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2009/roll477.xml

As President Obama said yesterday, this is a vote of historic proportions on a piece of legislation that will open the door to a new, clean energy economy.

Most of Washington's delegation stepped up to deliver on this historic vote. Congressman Jay Inslee, in particular, has been a strong leader in the effort to move our country towards a clean energy future. Also, Congressman Dave Reichert is to be commended for delivering this key environmental vote for his 8th Congressional District, standing as one of only eight Republicans from throughout the country who voted in favor of this legislation.

Here's how our delegation voted:

Congressman Jay Inslee (D-1): Yes
Congressman Rick Larsen (D-2): Yes
Congressman Brian Baird (D-3): Yes
Congressman Doc Hastings (R-4): No
Congresswoman Cathy McMorris (R-5): No
Congressman Norm Dicks (D-6): Yes
Congressman Jim McDermott (D-7): Yes
Congressman Dave Reichert (R-8): Yes
Congressman Adam Smith (D-9): Yes

Thank you to all of you who made calls and sent emails to your Representatives in the days leading up to this vote. We'll have more information for you soon about thanking those in Congress who stood up for our clean energy future.

We are proud to work with our regional and national colleagues to adopt strong climate change policy. We will now continue our efforts to strengthen and pass this legislation as the debate moves to the US Senate. If you haven't renewed your membership or made a gift to Washington Conservation Voters this year, now is a great time to do so in order to support this critical work.

Thank you very much for helping us take this historic step forward.

Sincerely,

Kurt Fritts

JP Kemmick headshot“As a young person, I feel compelled to fight against climate change, but I do so not out of fear but out of unfailing hope, out of a definitive optimism that we can stop climate change and in the process bring about a wealth of positive change for everyone on this planet.  The political system we have in place may not be perfect, but if we're going to make real change, we're going to have to work with it.  Our politicians need to know that our earth is non-negotiable and we need strong action now." -JP Kemmick, Pierce Conservation Voters
