King County Council District 2

Over nearly three decades, WCV has worked to ensure our endorsement is a clear sign to voters that any candidate who has earned this designation will fight to ensure all people in Washington state have a healthy place to live, a strong economy, and a protected environment. We have a rigorous vetting process and don’t decide to endorse lightly. But in a handful of races there are two candidates who we feel have earned our support. In these races, both have shown they will work to live up to the values of WCV and our members.

Councilmember Larry Gossett has spent a decades-long career fighting for his community and working to improve the quality of life for people in King County. His commitment to moving King County’s bus fleet to 100% renewable energy and his history of support for environmental measures earned him an endorsement.

Girmay Zahilay’s campaign is centered on weaving together transportation, healthcare, and labor rights into a coherent environmental justice platform. Zahilay is a practicing attorney and volunteers in the school district. His work to bring forward issues of environmental justice would be a welcome voice on the council.

Voters would be served well by both of these candidates. To learn more about the candidates visit their websites: Larry Gossett: https://www.larrygossett.org/ Girmay Zahilay: https://electgirmay.com/

King County Council District 4

Over nearly three decades, WCV has worked to ensure our endorsement is a clear sign to voters that any candidate who has earned this designation will fight to ensure all people in Washington state have a healthy place to live, a strong economy, and a protected environment. We have a rigorous vetting process and don’t decide to endorse lightly. But in a handful of races there are two candidates who we feel have earned our support. In these races, both have shown they will work to live up to the values of WCV and our members.

Abigail Doerr has dedicated her career to climate and transit advocacy. She was the campaign manager for I-1631, Washington state’s ballot measure that would have passed the nation’s first fee on carbon pollution, as well as the campaign manager for Sound Transit 3, the largest public transportation expansion in state history. She has shown time and again that she lives her values championing environmental justice and will bring energy and focus to environmental solutions in office.

Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles has been a long-time ally of environmental protection. Before joining the Council she served in the State Legislature as a consistent pro-environmental vote, and on the Council she’s continued advancing environmental issues like the county’s electric bus fleet and fossil fuel ban. Her long track record of environmental progress and support earned her our endorsement.

Voters would be served well by both of these candidates. To learn more about the candidates visit their websites: Jeanne Kohl-Welles: https://jeannekohlwelles.com/ Abigail Doerr: https://www.abigaildoerr.com/

Port of Seattle Position 2

Over nearly three decades, WCV has worked to ensure our endorsement is a clear sign to voters that any candidate who has earned this designation will fight to ensure all people in Washington state have a healthy place to live, a strong economy, and a protected environment. We have a rigorous vetting process and don’t decide to endorse lightly. But in a handful of races, there are two candidates who we feel have earned our support. In these races, both have shown they will work to live up to the values of WCV and our members.

Sam Cho founded an international export company and interacts daily with port operations. He has a strong vision for the Port transitioning to sustainable sources of energy as rapidly as possible. He also has experience working in the US State Department and as a Commissioner on the Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs, all which give him valuable perspective on issues at the port.

Preeti Shridhar’s impressive vision for an inclusive economy that includes strong worker and environmental protection earned her an endorsement. With her 25+ years working with King County cities, businesses, and community organizations, Preeti is rooted in the community and would serve the Port Commission well.

Voters would be served well by both of these candidates. To learn more about the candidates visit their websites: Preeti Shridhar: https://preetiforport.com/ and Sam Cho: https://www.electsamcho.com/

Whatcom County Executive

Over nearly three decades, WCV has worked to ensure our endorsement is a clear sign to voters that any candidate who has earned this designation will fight to ensure all people in Washington state have a healthy place to live, a strong economy, and a protected environment. We have a rigorous vetting process and don’t decide to endorse lightly. But in a handful of races there are two candidates who we feel have earned our support. In these races, both have shown they will work to live up to the values of WCV and our members.

Karen Burke has a deep understanding of the climate crisis and her proven track record of bringing community members together to find solutions. Karen brings 18 years of executive experience as the Director of Lummi Tribal Court and the Executive Director of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services. She has managed multi-million dollar budgets and overseen complex agencies through transitions and periods of growth. If elected, she plans to focus on reducing the county’s carbon footprint and climate resiliency. She knows we must transition our work force and ensure fossil fuel workers have a place in that future.

Satpal Sidhu has proven time and again he will stand up for the environment. As a Whatcom County Council Member, he has worked to improve the region’s economy while preventing the construction of a proposed coal terminal that would have set the region’s economy, public health, and quality of life back by decades. As the former president of a solar company, he has the vision and business experience to help Whatcom County be a center for the clean energy economy.

Voters would be served well by both of these candidates. To learn more about the candidates visit their websites: Satpal Sidhu: https://votesatpalsidhu.com/ and Karen Burke: https://electkarenburke.com/

Bellingham Mayor

Over nearly three decades, WCV has worked to ensure our endorsement is a clear sign to voters that any candidate who has earned this designation will fight to ensure all people in Washington state have a healthy place to live, a strong economy, and a protected environment. We have a rigorous vetting process and don’t decide to endorse lightly. While there are many candidates who have environmental credentials running for Bellingham Mayor, there are two candidates that stand out and earned WCV endorsements as the best candidates to protect our environment and take on the climate crisis.

April Barker is prioritizing climate justice in her campaign and understands the connection between affordable housing, transportation, healthy communities, and the environment. Working as a middle school teacher, she was elected in 2015 to the Bellingham City Council and made combating climate change a centerpiece of her campaign. As mayor, she would challenge Bellingham to set bold goals to combat climate change and be a leader for clean energy.

Pinky Vargas is calling for Bellingham to be a leader on environmental solutions and has the background voters can trust to get the job done as mayor. Through her work with Puget Sound Energy, she has a deep knowledge of water and energy efficiency programs, and was even given PSE’s 2017 Energy Award for her work. Pinky’s commitment to her community and finding solutions is clear from her time on the City Council where she made water quality a centerpiece of her work and fought for improvements to the state’s toxic clean up law.

Voters would be served well by both of these candidates. To learn more about the candidates visit their websites: April Barker: https://www.aprilbarker.com/ and Pinky Vargas: http://votepinkyvargas.com/

Both Cary Moon and Jenny Durkan participated in the Washington Conservation Voters endorsement process. Both candidates would serve the community of Seattle well in promoting, proposing, and implementing policies that will keep Seattle at the forefront of the urban environmental movement. They would both hold the Federal Government accountable for their anti-clean air and water policies.

Dhingra

Manka Dhingra is running for the open seat in the 45th legislative district in Washington State. This seat is a critical win to flip the balance of the State Senate to pro-environment, opening the door to legislative action on climate in the legislature.  Although this district has historically been a swing district, last year Hillary Clinton won in the 45th legislative district by 65%.  Dhingra is a prosecutor, PTSA mom, and anti-domestic violence advocate and community leader. Dhingra has a strong commitment to environmental protection from her background in public health and education, and believes that all kids deserve a healthy environment.  Dhingra has been endorsed by Washington Conservation Voters.

Secretary of State

Bringing needed reforms to our election system and increasing voting access for all.

We know the vast majority of Washingtonians believe in taking bold action to protect and preserve our environment and public health – but voter turnout is also historic lows; 6 of 10 Washingtonians did not vote in last year’s election. Tina Podlodowski has the background and skill set to set out and achieve an agenda to bring needed reforms to our election system and work to engage a broader swatch of Washingtonians in our democracy. Washingtonians can be confident she will bring overlooked reforms back to the forefront and invest in a voting system that works for Washington Voters.

Tina Podlodowski’s three decades of leadership in technology, government, and management has saved taxpayers millions of dollars and improved public safety and health.

Attorney General

A champion for environmental protection.

As the state’s highest criminal justice authority, Attorney General Bob Ferguson continues to be a champion for environmental protection. He has opened cases against major violators and polluters, as well as dismissed legislative attempts to investigate proven science. Currently, his office is discussing joining New York and California to investigate Exxon-Mobil for knowingly covering-up climate science. The state can be confident that under Bob Ferguson’s leadership the attorney general’s office will continue to prioritize Washingtonians’ legal right to a healthy and safe environment.

Commissioner of Public Lands

Washington state has a clear choice for Commissioner of Public Lands.

The State Department of Natural Resources has vast influence over Washington’s environmental future. The department manages over 5 million acres of forest, farm, and aquatic public lands for the shared benefit of everyone in our state.

Hilary Franz is a proven leader who’s put in the time to understand Washington’s public forests and water ways. She has spent 18 years promoting sustainable management and rural economic development and understands that protecting the land and community prosperity are two sides of the same coin.

She is also the only candidate in the race with significant public lands issue experience. She is the right person to lead the Department of Natural Resources core mission; managing our land for the shared benefit of everyone in Washington.

Hilary Franz is the current Futurewise Executive director and former Bainbridge Island Councilwomen. During her impressive career she has worked to protect the working families and communities that rely on forestry and farmland throughout Washington State. Franz is a former Washington Environmental Council Board member, has sat on the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council and was appointed by the Governor to the Washington State Climate Action Team. She has worked on behalf of farming communities in every corner of the state from Skagit, Whatcom and Pierce Counties to communities in Benton, Kittitas and Okanogan.

When our forests are healthy, our and more people have greater access to the outdoors, communities across Washington win. We need to elect a leader who understands how to manage our lands so they work for everyone. Hilary Franz will be that champion.
